Wereworld Cover

Here’s my latest book cover for the North American hardcover release of “Wereworld”, an awesome novel written by Curtis Jobling and published by Viking Press. I’ve been anxious to post this for a while and since it’s now available on Amazon and cropping up here and there, I thought I’d put it up!

I really enjoyed the creative process on this, particularly since the Art Director wanted to develop a new look for the North American release. He wanted something more graphic and atmospheric. I also really enjoyed the wide composition the wraparound allowed for and there’s few things I enjoy painting more than a dark, foggy forest with a shadowy mythic creature and a hero thrown in for good measure!

The book will be on shelves in September and I enjoyed it cover to cover. Plenty of action, a richly detailed world, interesting characters and a story that hooked me from the beginning!

* Edit, August 10th, 2011 - Well, it looks like this won't be the published cover for the NA release of Wereworld after all. The AD let me know the publisher went with a different approach for the cover. This was still a great experience and the AD was happy with my work, so that's good...I'm just a bit disappointed that my work won't be out there on the shelves.

  1. Nice job man! Definitely makes me want to see you take on more young adult book covers. I think your style fits the genre really well. The creature (werewolf-ish ? ) looks awesome.

  2. Indeed! Great job...looks like there was a lot of joy painting that up. Can you post concepts and process shots?
I dig that the main character is left handed...sinister! Like me. ;)

  3. Hey guys...thanks very much for the comments!!!

Scott - man, I love the YA covers! Glad you think my style fits well since you're such a pro at them yourself! I'd love to do more of these and I'm hoping there's some more in my future.

Dave - Thanks so much, man...I did have a lot of fun painting this one up! I'll post up some process sketches for you when I get a chance...I don't have any concepts though, I designed the character within the painting. (which goes against the concept artist in me, haha...)

  4. aw man, what the fuck, I am more than a little sad that I cant buy a book with you illo for the cover.

sorry to hear it. you guys must have gone back and forth a bit on it......hope they didnt opt for a photo of the moon with a red ribbon and a tree branch... (hehe)

lets hang out asap. really want to catch up and see how things are going for you guys.

    miss you.

  5. Hey Tony! Yeah, definitely disappointing and there was some back and forth, but the AD was great to work with and had a solid vision. It was a "powers that be" thing.

Not to worry though, Fox & Phoenix is due out on October 13th, so you can still buy a book with a cover of mine!

We'll definitely hang out soon. I'll give you a shout! Miss you too, my friend
